Often a cartoon rainbow will fill the sky in an sweeping arch across the sky (not unlike the effect that could be had by assaulting The Arch with a prismatic dose of paint. Also, the surrounding sky is typically a bold shade of blue atypical of rainy weather.
On the other hand, real rainbows hover inconspicuously in a corner of the sky, waiting for wandering eyes to cross their paths. If those eyes happen to be behind the lens of a camera, one lucky rainbow might find itself hovering inconspicuously in the corner of a picture of the day.
